Fun-first Computer Programming
Coding & Game Design
Budding programmers will use Scratch to create interactive stories, games, and animations as we learn to code with color-coded blocks. Scratch was created at MIT to help young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. We’ll build racing games, costume-changing dancers, maze chases, and maybe even put ourselves into the programs we make with our own karate, dance or parkour moves! As we code, we’ll practice fundamental academic skills in math, language arts, social studies and art. Let’s code!
Hands-on Experiments at Home
Science Lab Arts
Your home science lab opens today! Let’s create rubber eggs, rock candy, cloud in a jar, jelly bean building, elephant toothpaste, DIY thermometers, strawberry DNA, newspaper forts, moon sand, marbled paper, paper rainbows, egg geodes and more in this hands-on art and science experiments lab! We’ll issue a simple, household materials list each week for you to have on hand and then together we will dive into the why, what and how of art projects and the practical implementation of science.
Toys to Towers: We can build it!
3D Design with TinkerCAD
Budding 3D designers will design and build toys, games, cars, phones, robots, prosthetics, circuits and animations in the free, browser-based 3D design tool, TinkerCAD. We’ll learn and apply the skills industrial designers, architects, and engineers use to design and create simulated circuits and code automated objects, learning spatial awareness, geometry, and math computation along the way. We can even build in virtual LEGO bricks and Minecraft blocks! From mind to design in minutes–all we have to do is start building!
Storytelling, Creativity & Performing Arts
Center Stage
Casting call for future performers! They say “all the world’s a stage,” so come join us as we channel our inner fairies in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, create ice castles with Elsa, play high-energy games through improv, and combine our voices in Broadway-bound song renditions of “Tomorrow” from Annie and “Do-Re-Mi” from the Sound of Music. We’ll even compose and create our own gratitude and togetherness-themed movies to share with our loved ones. Play on!
Circuits, Contraptions & Creativity
Minecraft Engineering
Minecraft is an open-world game that promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive environment where the only limit is your imagination. Let’s build giant pixel art, adventure quests, circuit-based musical instruments and contraptions, and Hero’s Journey stories, all in a secure MakerState server, guided by our live instructor. Software purchase required: $26.95
