Looking for enthusiastic, experienced, and responsible after school instructors in hands-on STEM crafts (paper rockets, cardboard derby cars, magnet slime, etc), LEGO robotics, Scratch coding, Tinkercad 3D design and printing, and Minecraft for elementary students at diverse schools around NYC.

Schedule: Programs generally occur between 2:30–6:00pm, Monday through Friday. This position can renew each semester, pending performance and school contracts.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Afterschool instructor for students ages 5–14 leading hands-on projects in material engineering, Scratch coding, robotics, Minecraft, and Tinkercad.
  • Research and create project lessons for materials engineering and computer science, including recording instructional videos.
  • Liaison with school site directors, parents, and staff to ensure program success.
  • Preferred (not required): Volunteer with MakerState Labs to support students with demonstrated financial need.

Qualifications

  • Experience managing and teaching children ages 5-14
  • Ability to communicate professionally with the AfterSchool Director and parents
  • Ability to travel throughout NYC for work and be on time every day
  • Ability to maintain consistent and professional communications and record-keeping via phone, email, and Google Drive
  • Ability to commit to the entire semester of work
  • Verbal and written English language proficiency required
  • Improvise and supplement additional projects/curriculum as necessary
  • Expertise/passion in a STEM/STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) field (see Preferred Experience below)
  • IMPORTANT: You will be required to be fingerprinted and background-checked and attend training prior to teaching, in most cases. Your background check will be paid for.

Preferred Experience

  • Scratch, and/or other computer programming languages/tools/apps for kids
  • Tinkercad (or other 3D design apps like SketchUp, Autodesk, Blender, Maya)
  • Stop-motion movie making & editing: iMovie, Moviemaker, Final Cut, etc.
  • Game design: analog & video games
  • Microcontrollers: Arduino, LilyPad, Flora, Raspberry Pi
  • 3D printing
  • Space Engineers, Game Salad, Gamestar Mechanic, Stencyl
  • Kid-friendly tech like MaKey MaKey, littleBits, Snap Circuits
  • Crafting, designing, building, hacking, and making in general
  • LEGO Mindstorms EV3 and WeDo robotics systems, and mBot/mBlock
  • Ability to write new lesson plans in a tech-arts field in which you are passionate/skilled is a big plus
  • Minecraft for creativity and education
  • Instructors with NYSED licensure on any grade level and a passion for makerspace and digital arts/media are preferred but not necessary

Be a full time camp instructor during our nine week July-August STEM Summer Camp in NYC. Join our team of Maker Fellows who are inspiring the next generation of innovators in summer camp. Through hands-on “Challenge” projects, we teach Scratch video game design, Minecraft Engineering, TinkerCAD, rocket science, material engineering, and other kid-tech-arts.

Qualifications

  • High school or college student with a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Interest and/or experience in a STEAM subject (science, technology, engineering, arts, math)

  • Experience working with kids ages 6-18 in a school or community-based program
  • Computer programming tools for kids such as Scratch, Game Salad, Gamestar Mechanic (regular programming languages great too!)

Job Description

Your responsibilities include:

  • Help create and execute our latest school growth plan.
  • Research market data and report analysis for growth of our program model.
  • Research new market opportunities and maintain data in Google Docs, Sheets and a CRM.
  • Support marketing and partner development team in reaching new customers and extending brand awareness in key markets.
  • Help train team on use of CRM.
  • Use social media manager application (we use Hootsuite at this time) to ensure we have an everyday, every medium presence in social media and use these platforms to connect and associate and build audiences and relationship with affinity organizations, thought leaders, and potential customers.
  • Must have social entrepreneur and/or positive social impact orientation; STEM and/or education focus/interest a plus.


Qualifications

  • Majoring/Minoring in Business, Entrepreneurship or Marketing.
  • Experience using a CRM such as Insightly
  • Experience using Google Docs/Spreadsheets
  • Experience using a Social Media Manager app
